The story begins with the BOSS OD-1, released in 1977, which established the compact overdrive format and asymmetrical clipping approach.

In August 1985 BOSS introduced the BOSS OD‑2 Turbo OverDrive as a successor to the OD-1. Its goal: one mode that matched the OD-1 sound, plus a “Turbo” mode for more gain and saturation.

Production for the OD-2 moved from Japan to Taiwan around late 1988.

Then in November 1994 BOSS released the OD-2R (“R” for Remote) — same base OD-2 circuit, but added a remote jack to allow a foot-switch to toggle Turbo mode, and subtly increased gain/output in Turbo mode.

The OD-2r offers two operating modes: Normal (classic overdrive like the OD-2) and Turbo (higher gain, more saturation).
